Facts about Backing
If you want to produce a finished product that is high quality, you need to be sure you use the correct backing. Embroidery backing is a non-woven product that is usually 100% cotton or a mix of cotton and polyester. It is applied to the back of the garment to be embroidered, and then a design is sewn on the other side of the garment. Backing is a stabilizer and helps set the stitches into the fabric. This product can be sold in bundles of cut squares, or in large rolls, depending on the needs of the embroiderer and what the seller has in stock.

How to Select Backing
When you are selecting backing you should consider the following questions:

  • How stable is the fabric of the garment you are embroidering?
  • What is the density of stitches in the design?
  • How big is the design to be embroidered?
  • How much does the fabric to be embroidered stretch?
  • How long are the stitches?
  • How fast are you going to be stitching the design?

The backing choice you make can have a large impact on the success or failure of your finished embroidery. If you have any questions about how to select backing, please contact an EnMart Customer Service Representative for more information.
